Validity of the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test: misconceptions lead to incorrect conclusions.

چکیده
I n her article entitled "Testing Vestibular Function: Problems With the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test" (American Journal ofOccupational Therapy, July 1989), Helen Cohen concluded: "Although postrotatory nystagmus is indicative of vestibular system function, the SCPNT [Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test] does not provide a valid measure of that behavior. Therefore, results from this test are not valid indicators of vestibular function" (p. 475). Although Dr. Cohen is to be applauded for providing an excellent review of some aspects affecting the testing of pure vestibular responses and for attempting to educate therapists on the validity of a Widely used test, she has failed to recognize the distinction between the testing of pure vestibular responses and the purpose of the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test (SCPNT) (Ayres, 1975). This distinction is central to the use and interpretation of results on the SCPNT. Ayres (1972, 1976, 1978, 1982) was consistent in conceptually and operationally defining the vestibular system in a much broader context than that described by Cohen, including the vestibular receptors "and all major neuronal mechanisms in· fluenced by sensory input from those receptors" (Ayres, 1978, p. 28). The vestibular receptors (semicircular canals and otoliths), vestibular nuclei, vestibulospinal pathways, vestibulocerebellar pathways, vestibuloocular pathways, and vestibulocortical projections are all considered to be components of the vestibular system (Clark, 1985). This view of the vestibular system emphasizes the global influences of vestibular stimuli processed within the central nervous Teri Wiss, Florence Clark

Excessive postrotary nystagmus duration in learning-disabled children.
The Southern California Sensory Integration Test results of 109 learning-disabled children were reviewed and analyzed to investigate the hypothesis that learning-disabled children with excessive postrotary nystagmus durations display greater neuropsychological impairment than learning-disabled children with normal or depressed postrotary nystagmus. The findings supported the hypothesis that lea...
متن کاملExpanded N orlllative Data : Southern California Postrotary
A comparison study was conducted in which 372 subjects, ages 3 through 10 years, were tested by using the Southern California Postrotary Nystagmus Test. The purpose of the study was to determine the generalizability of the origznal normatiVe data for the test by uszng a larger sample and an expanded age range of subjects. A comparison of these data from the comparison study with the origznal no...
متن کاملCharacteristics of vestibular function and static balance skills in deaf children.
The vestibular function and static balance skills of 34 children who had sensorineural deafness, ranged in age from 5 to 9 years, and attended the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf were compared with normative data. The purpose of the investigation was to describe the characteristics of vestibular function and static balance skill in deaf children who had no other known handicaps. We exp...
متن کاملValidity of the Postrotary Nystagmus Test for Measuring Vestibular Function
This study examined the validity of the Postrotary Nystagmus (PRN) test as a measure of vestibular functioning by examining the relations of scores from the PRN test with those from other variables measuring similar functions and through conducting a group comparison study. The PRN test is one of 17 tests included in the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT). Using SIPT scores from 575 ch...
متن کاملThe effects of socioeconomic status on hand size and strength, vestibular function, visuomotor integration, and praxis in preschool children.
Differences in hand size and strength, vestibular function, visuomotor integration, and praxis in preschool children as a function of socioeconomic status were investigated. Twenty-two children of lower socioeconomic status, aged 3 to 5 years, were each matched with a child of higher socioeconomic status on the basis of race, sex, hand dominance, age, height, and weight. Measures used were the ...
